OFF-GRID SAUNA IN THE MONTANA MOUNTAINS.
Tucked into 80 acres of remote wilderness in western Montana, the Walker Sauna is a custom-designed, off-grid retreat built for restoration, connection, and simplicity. Located next to an existing cabin, this wood-fired sauna was created as a personal sanctuary for the owner—a passionate outdoorsman who sees sauna as an essential part of health and well-being.
The structure is clad in charred shou sugi ban siding, blending durability with a striking natural aesthetic. Inside, the layout includes a changing room, firewood storage, and a sauna that comfortably fits up to six people around a traditional wood-fired stove. Large windows bring in expansive views of the surrounding forest, offering a deep sense of connection to nature even while indoors. An outdoor shower and a generous covered porch allow for cooling off and relaxing post-session, surrounded by mountain air and quiet.
The shed roof gives the sauna a clean, contemporary profile while nodding to the rugged charm of classic mountain cabins. Its large overhang protects the porch from heavy snowfall in winter months, extending the usable outdoor space year-round.
Off-grid by necessity, the design is fully self-sufficient—wood-fired, unpowered, and rooted in the rhythms of nature. This small structure carries a simple mission: to create space for restoration, reflection, and the deep physical and mental reset that only a sauna in the wilderness can provide.
