ROASTING IT UP
Bluebeard Coffee Roasters – South Tacoma
Bluebeard’s second location isn’t just a new café—it’s a full-on revival. Set in a worn-down 1925 building in South Tacoma, this adaptive reuse project gave new life to a structure that had been sitting empty for years.
Now it’s both a wholesale roastery and a neighborhood spot that’s helping fuel the area’s broader comeback.
From day one, the goal was to embrace the grit. The design leans into Tacoma’s industrial roots—raw, tough, and functional—with just enough warmth to keep things welcoming. We kept the building’s high ceilings and added skylights to flood the space with natural light. The bones were solid, and we let them show.

One of the standout features is the glass wall that separates the café from the roastery. Built from salvaged antique windows, it lets customers see the roasting action up close—no secrets, just good coffee and craftsmanship on display. That transparency is a big part of the Bluebeard vibe.
Materials are straightforward and meant to last: concrete floors, exposed steel, reclaimed wood. The whole space is designed to handle heavy use while still feeling thoughtful and intentional. It’s built to work hard—just like Tacoma.
The layout keeps roasting and café operations running smoothly without cutting them off from each other. You can sip your espresso while watching beans tumble in the roaster just a few feet away.
In the end, this project is about more than coffee. It’s about bringing energy back to a part of the city that’s ready for it—and letting a solid old building do what it does best: stand strong, stay useful, and tell a good story.
